Dear Reader, I'm so excited to share this month's interview with Marie Le Moal. I "met" Marie through Liz Kohler Brown's The Studio membership. Her work is filled with wonderful texture and symmetry. Be sure to read her answer to number 3, I appreciate her honest answer. I create vintage, sea and nature-inspired patterns with the block printing technique. I manually carve stamps on soft rubber-like material and then use inkpads to build colourful patterns on paper and vintage book pages/ music sheets. I very much like diving into vintage art in books and local exhibitions. I live by the Mediterranean sea, and the ocean and its inhabitants are my biggest source of inspiration. I realized I’m very influenced by the seasons, and the colour changes you can see in nature. My orange-brown-gold yellow inkpads are dusted off the drawers in fall! I’ve been working for nearly two years with a small art and craft gallery in Paris, and I very vividly remember getting a “yes” from the owner after meeting her and showing my work. It was a huge confidence boost, being accepted in a shop with so many artists who I admire the work and journey. While I honestly don’t make so much money selling there, it’s been a turning point for me in terms of killing the imposter syndrome. I’d say to really listen to their own voice, an advice I wish I had followed earlier. Being true to who you are, and what type of art you like making instead of trying to fit in boxes and follow a pretend “journey to success”. Last but not least, do not be discouraged and celebrate the small wins along the way (easier said than done, but I reckon essential). I’m part of The Studio by Liz Kohler Brown, and really love it! I don’t have a very arty group of friends/family in real life, and being part of an online group really helps in terms of mindset! Even if I learned a lot in terms of technique/craft with online classes, to me now the biggest asset of these online communities is about staying on track and to keep believing it’s doable!
